In today’s interconnected world, technology offers endless possibilities but also new challenges, especially for women and marginalized communities.This page brings together global initiatives addressing the intersection of gender and digital rights.From combating online violence to promoting women’s participation in tech, they spotlight efforts that foster empowerment, privacy and equality in the digital space.

Take Back The Tech

Take Back The Tech is a collaborative global campaign that connects the issue of violence against women and information and communications technology (ICT). 

 

It aims to raise awareness on the way violence against women is occurring on ICT platforms such as the Internet and mobile phones, and to call for people to use ICT in activism to end violence against women. It was initiated by the Association for Progressive Communications, Women’s Networking Support Programme, in 2006. 

 

Since then, the campaign has been taken up and organised by individuals, collectives and non-governmental organizations in at least 24 countries. The name Take Back The Tech! was inspired by the Take Back the Night (or Reclaim the Night) movement, an international feminist march and rally to take direct action against rape and other forms of violence against women. https://www.takebackthetech.net/

Digital Rights Foundation (DRF)

 DRF, based in Pakistan, DRF focuses on digital rights, including women’s privacy online. They run helplines and workshops to educate women about digital security and advocate for stronger data protection laws. https://digitalrightsfoundation.pk/

Coding Rights

Coding Rights is a Brazilian organization that addresses the intersection of gender and technology. 

They work on projects that highlight the importance of digital privacy for women and marginalized communities in Latin America. https://codingrights.org/en/

African Union’s Gender Strategy 

African Union’s Gender Strategy has developed strategies to promote gender equality, which include components addressing women’s rights in the digital space, emphasizing the need for privacy and security online. https://au.int/en/articles/au-strategy-gender-equality-and-womens-empowerment

Intimità Violata

Intimità Violata was promoted in Italy in 2018 by sociologist Silvia Semenzin, this campaign called for a law against image-based sexual abuse, known as ‘revenge porn’.

Women in Digital

Women in Digital, the European Commission supports various initiatives to promote women’s participation in the digital sector, also addressing issues related to privacy and online security. Among these, the Women TechEU program supports female-led tech start-ups.  https://womenindigital.org/
